About this piece
Original sepia real photo of a crew of ten mine workers posed on heavy timber steps, about 5.7 x 3.5 inches. Several wear lamps mounted on their caps, all are in work-grimed overalls and jackets, and one man has a pipe in his mouth. Used condition: a crease at the upper left corner, light edge wear, and faint photo-corner marks and pencil notes on the back.
Four men stand at the back and six sit on the step in front, faces and clothes darkened from work. Behind them is a timber tower with a flag on top, which appears to be a mine headframe or tipple, along with a smokestack and a railing.
The print is continuous-tone photographic paper with a plain back (no postcard printing or stamp box). The back has "6¢ each" and a number written in pencil. No place, mine or company name appears anywhere on the photo. Dress and cap lamps suggest roughly the 1910s to 1920s.
A strong occupational image for mining, labor history or industrial photography collectors.
