About this piece
Early stereoview of Girard College, Philadelphia, from Langenheim's American Stereoscopic Views. Arched-top albumen images show the great columned Greek Revival main building (Founder's Hall) across an open lawn with young trees, side buildings visible behind. Caption printed in red, "Girard College, Philadelphia," with LANGENHEIM blindstamps on the front and back. About 6.9 x 3.4 inches. Used condition: toned mount, light stains, edge and corner wear, and the publisher's label on the back is torn at the left end.
The back label reads Langenheim's American Stereoscopic Views with an "Entered according to Act of Congress" copyright line dated in the 1850s. The Langenheim brothers of Philadelphia were among the earliest American stereo photographers, which makes their own city views especially sought after.
A solid early card for collectors of Philadelphia history, Girard College, Langenheim, or pre-Civil War American stereo photography. Please see all photos for condition.
