About this piece
"Alaska: The Last Great U.S. Frontier" by Fred Leonard, a Help-Your-Self Booklet (Number 5837), copyright 1958, illustrated by Werner Kappes. Two-color booklet in turquoise and black, about 5.1 x 7.2 inches. Very good condition.
Written as Alaska became the 49th state, it opens with the Senate's 64-20 statehood vote and a comedian's quip that the new flag would have "48 stars — and a snowball," then covers the land, climate, people, cities and resources, with a map of Alaska laid over the lower 48. A fun aside compares Alaska's icebox myth to the old "Smoky City" reputation of Pittsburgh.
A charming statehood-era piece for Alaska and mid-century graphics collectors.
