About this piece

Real photo postcard (RPPC) captioned "Ven, Milborne Port." and numbered No 30, showing the great house behind its iron gates and railings, flanked by large cedars and clipped yews across the lawn. Postally used to Oak Park, Illinois, U.S.A. with a red George V one penny stamp, a Sherborne, Dorset circular postmark, a hexagonal "T" tax mark, and a magenta "Postage Due 2 Cents Chicago, Ill. For. Sec. 4" handstamp. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 in. Condition: used, with a chip at one corner, edge and corner wear, and the handwritten message on the back.

The back is marked "POST CARD", "British Manufacture" and "This is a 'Real Photograph'", with a vertical imprint at the left edge naming a Milborne Port Post Office as the source. The handwritten message to Mrs. Adolf G. Ensrud mentions sailing on Sept. 2 and travel plans in September.

For postal history collectors, this is a British card that arrived in the U.S. marked as underpaid: the British "T" tax marking was answered by a Chicago foreign-section postage-due handstamp of 2 cents. A nice crossover piece for English country house, Somerset and Dorset, and transatlantic postal history collections.
