About this piece

An 1899 cover with its original enclosed letter, addressed in ink to Rev. Pres. T. B. Roth, D.D., Greenville, Pa. Machine cancel reading Pittsburg, Pa., Sep 7, 7:30 PM, 1899, with a 2-cent red Washington stamp, and a Greenville, Pa. receiving backstamp. Envelope about 6.3 x 3.8 inches. Condition: envelope is toned with torn edges at the right end and upper left, a yellow highlighter-style mark under the town line, and spotting on the back; the letter has fold lines and light toning.

The letter is two typed pages in purple ink, dated Sept. 6 from 1844 Center Av., Pittsburg, and signed "As ever, G.W.C." It is a frank, wry note between churchmen: a loan from "Dillie's" insurance money, a treasurer who would not forward $50 because every penny went to the preacher's check, a report to the synod that must be explained to its officers, and a preacher living on $25 a month.

Other lines mention a former student now driving a confectioner's wagon selling candy, a doctor "at Chau." who mistreated the writer's shoulder, an Odd Fellows' hall opening at Prospect, plans for an "Old Home Week," and the Felicia N. Critchlow Scholarship.

T. B. Roth was president of Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, which fits the "Pres." in the address. A good piece for Pennsylvania postal history, Lutheran and college history, or western Pennsylvania collectors.
