About this piece

A 1943 V-Mail letter complete with its War & Navy Departments V-Mail Service "Official Business" window envelope, postmarked New York, N.Y., Apr 30, 7:30 PM, 1943 with a Grand Central Annex penalty-imprint cancel. The photo-reduced letter is addressed to Miss Betty Schlaechter, 621 Wilson Ave., Columbus, Ohio, from a soldier who signs his name in the sender block (appears to read Harold McDermitt), a Service Battery, APO, U.S. Army, c/o Postmaster, dated April 17, 1943, with a "Passed by U.S. Army Examiner" censor stamp numbered 00959. Envelope about 4.9 x 4 inches. Condition: envelope has water staining across the top and edge toning; the letter has its original folds and darkening at the margins typical of V-Mail prints.

The handwritten letter thanks "Dearest Betty" for her letters of January 30 and later, is glad she likes her job and is working with Anne, mentions a letter from Lewis, and asks how she made out on her birthday, adding that people should have saved their money "with prices so high."

A complete, readable WWII soldier-to-home V-Mail with named sender and recipient. Good for WWII postal history, Columbus, Ohio, and Schlaechter or McDermitt family genealogy.
