About this piece

An early embossed birthday greeting postcard reading "A Happy Birthday" in gold, with pink wild roses and buds, a pink ribbon bow, and a white dove carrying the ribbon across a gold embossed bar, set on a mottled lavender ground inside a dark floral border. Standard size, about 5.5 x 3.5 inches, with a divided back. Used condition with light edge and corner wear, a faint pencil scrawl at the bottom of the front, and handwriting on the back.

The back is hand-dated in pencil "Jan 31" with the year written as what appears to be 1912. It is signed "from Grand Ma Burton" and addressed to Mary Esther Burton, Salem. No stamp or postmark, so it appears to have been hand-delivered. A small publisher's monogram with the number 717 is printed at the lower left of the back.

A sweet family keepsake from the Burton correspondence, with strong embossing and rich color typical of the early 1910s greeting card era.
