About this piece
An early embossed Valentine postcard reading "To My Valentine," showing a curly-haired cupid reclining in a rocking chair inside a heart-shaped wreath of blue and yellow pansies, with a ribbon reading "The Man in Possession." A verse at right begins "You see the situation and the fix I'm in to-day, There's someone in possession of my heart who's come to stay." Standard size, about 5.5 x 3.5 inches, with a divided back. Used condition with light corner and edge wear, a small scuff in the verse area, and the name "Helen" written in pencil on the front.
Posted with a flag cancel from Salem, Ohio, dated Feb 16, 1910, and a green one-cent Franklin stamp. Addressed to Mary Esther Burton, Salem, Ohio, R.D. No. 5. The message from Helen thanks Mary Esther for her valentine and describes a school play with sixteen in it, eight boys and eight girls, closing "with love to all, Good by."
The back is printed with a small diamond monogram and "P.C. 208" at the lower left. A charming school-age valentine with a full, readable message and a clean Ohio postmark.
