About this piece

A charming Depression-era correspondence group sent to Miss Josephine Splendore of 219 Hitchman St., Mt. Pleasant, Pa., 1935–1936. It centers on a playful, flirtatious series of handwritten letters from a writer signing as J.W., "A Dumb Do-Do," President of the "Dukane Nite Club," a made-up club for Fox Chapel residents and their friends, plus the hand-lettered 1936 membership card he enclosed. Mailed cover is about 5.5 x 3.7 in. Condition: used, with toning, folds, a torn top edge on the mailed cover and light soiling.

Includes, as pictured:
• Cover postmarked Pittsburgh, Pa., Dec. 28, 1935, 3c Washington stamp, "Buy U.S. Savings Bonds" slogan cancel
• Letter dated Dec. 18, 1935 enrolling "Jo" in the club, with jokes about the Fuller Brush man, the dues payable to "Dumb Do-Do," and a P.S. about George Raft
• Hand-lettered membership card for 1936: password "To be sure," location "Saw-Mill Rd."
• "Greetings from the Dukane Night Club" card and further letters
• Easter greeting card with a long note dated April 1, 1936, signed J.W.
• A 1936 letter from Washington, Pa. about a women's club scholarship application
• Small hand-addressed envelopes to Miss Josephine Splendore and "Sister Jo"

Wonderful voice and period slang. A fun piece of Westmoreland County and Pittsburgh-area social history.
