About this piece

The Youth's Companion, Boston, Thursday, October 16, 1884, Volume LVII, Number 42, published by Perry Mason & Co., No. 41 Temple Place. Weekly family paper measuring about 11.6 x 8.4 inches as folded. Used with toning, edge wear and chipping, some staining on the back, and a period handwritten notation "Mrs E M Stewart Feb 85" along the right edge of the front page.

The front page features "The Rival Bonfires" by C. A. Stephens, a story of New Hampshire's White Mountain country in the disputed Tilden and Hayes presidential election of 1876, when rival Republican and Democratic bonfires were built on Hawk Ledge and Maple Hill. A large engraving shows the townsfolk gathered at a lamp-lit meeting. The page also includes a short piece titled "Effective" on oratory, quoting O'Connell and General Stark at Bennington.

The ornate masthead shows a globe, telescope, open book and palette in a landscape vignette. A nice election-season issue of one of the most popular American family weeklies of the 19th century. Pages have not been checked one by one for completeness.
