About this piece
Vintage unused postcard of the Cathedral St. John the Divine, showing a "General View of Building and Grounds in Their Present Stage" with a round inset titled "Appearance of Cathedral When Completed." Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches, white border style with a divided back. Clean, bright card with no writing, postmark or stamp; light handling only, see photos.
The back carries a printed caption: "This magnificent building is expected to cost $10,000,000 before it is completed. It probably is the finest and best located cathedral in the world. The site is 250 feet above mean-tide, and the building 445 feet above its foundations will be visible 25 miles away." Card number N.Y. 378 is printed at lower left.
A nice piece for collectors of New York City views, church and cathedral postcards, or architecture history, showing the cathedral as a work in progress alongside the planned finished design.
