About this piece
Vintage linen postcard captioned "St. Michael's Church, Charleston, S.C." (number 80 on front, 17466N on back), showing the white church steeple with its clock and colonnaded portico above a quiet street lined with palmettos and a red brick wall. Vertical format, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Good used condition with light corner wear and a few small marks in the sky area.
The back describes it as one of the historic churches of America at the S.E. corner of Meeting and Broad Streets, cornerstone laid 1752, bells and clock brought from England in 1764 and the organ in 1768. Publisher line along the divider reads "...Co., Charleston, S.C. (LTY)", partly covered by the cancel.
Postally used from Memphis, Tenn., De Soto Sta., Aug 19, 2:30 PM, 194_ (last digit unclear), with a "Buy Defense Savings Bonds and Stamps" slogan cancel and a green 1 cent Statue of Liberty "For Defense" stamp. Message: "Greetings from the Southland, Lenore." Addressed to Miss Edna Russell, 728 Vine Street, Fulton, Missouri. A nice World War II home-front usage on a classic Charleston view.
