About this piece

Antique undivided-back postcard of the Universalist Church, Hoopeston, Ills., No. 3447, published by Adolph Selige Publishing Co., St. Louis, Mo. The black-and-white view shows the stone church with its tall crenellated bell tower and arched entry on a brick street. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Postally used with a 1907 Hoopeston machine cancel; handwritten messages on the front, edge and corner wear, and light toning.

Because it is an undivided back ("This side for the address only"), the sender wrote on the picture side as was required at the time. The top margin reads in part "I sent K.G. a postal one in return" signed "J.B.", and below the caption "Returned all O.K. Mr. John M. is a nice fellow."

The back is addressed to Miss Vera Lewis, Danville, Ill., Station B, with a green 1 cent Franklin stamp and Hoopeston and Danville markings. A nice Vermilion County piece for collectors of Illinois towns, Universalist church history, or early Selige view cards.
