About this piece

Antique divided-back postcard captioned "St. Benedict's German Catholic Church, Terra Haute, Ind." (spelled that way on the card), showing the red brick and stone church with its large central dome, domed towers, rose windows and triple-arched entrance. Vertical format, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Used condition with corner wear and small surface scuffs, a small chip in the sky near the caption, and toning.

Postally used: Terre Haute, Ind. "Trans. Clk." (transfer clerk) duplex cancel dated Aug 1909 with a green 1 cent Franklin stamp. The pencil message is dated "Wed. 25, 1909" and begins "Dear Frances - If the pass comes today I will come on the ... tonight, Papa will meet me ...", signed "your friend as ever" (name reading uncertain). Addressed to Miss Frances Yoos (reading uncertain), 909 Edgar Ave., Effingham, Ill. One line of the message is struck through.

A good early view of a landmark German Catholic parish, for Terre Haute, Indiana and Catholic church collectors.
