About this piece

Pocket booklet, "Rules and Regulations of The Board of Public Education, Pittsburgh, Pa." Gray paper wraps with a decorative printed border, printed by the Art Engraving & Printing Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. (imprint inside the front cover). About 2.7 x 4.6 inches. Undated; the paper, typography and content suggest the early 20th century. Used condition: a large dark water stain at the left side of the front cover that wraps around the spine to the back, toning, and some spotting at the inner gutter.

Article I, Classification of Schools, opens by dividing the public schools of Pittsburgh into kindergarten, elementary, special, secondary and normal schools, and lays out primary, intermediate and grammar grades. The special-schools section uses period language for ungraded classes, evening schools for adults and vocational schools — a frank look at how a big-city school system organized itself.

Good for Pittsburgh history collectors, educators and school-history researchers.
