About this piece

Antique stereoview by James Cremer, Photographer and Publisher, 18 South Eighth Street, Philadelphia, titled "'Old Liberty Bell,' 1776." It shows a close view of the bell hanging from its wooden yoke, with the crack and inscription visible. Orange-bordered mount, about 7.1 x 4.1 inches. Used condition with light edge and corner wear and a small red spot on the front image.

The back is printed with a long history headed The "Old Liberty Bell," Independence Hall, Philadelphia, beneath a Pennsylvania coat of arms with "Virtue, Liberty and Independence." The text quotes the bell's inscription, recounts its casting in England in 1751, recasting by Pass & Stow, ringing on July 8, 1776, removal to Allentown in 1777, and its 1872 placement in the vestibule of the State House, and opens "as we approach the hundredth anniversary of the nation's birth." It carries the imprint "James Cremer, Publisher, 18 South Eighth Street, Philadelphia."

A blue ink stamp reading "F. P. Ketter" (or Kettler) is on the back, likely a former owner's mark. A good card for Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Centennial-era Americana collectors.
