About this piece

Lot of four early Niagara Falls stereoviews on flat card mounts, about 7 x 3.4 inches each, c. 1859 to the 1880s: two hand-tinted London Stereoscopic Co. views, an 1859 E. Anthony view and a Geo. Barker card. All four show their age, with foxing, fading and edge wear as noted for each card below.

• London Stereoscopic Co. (blindstamp), hand-tinted: The Horse-Shoe Fall, Niagara, As Viewed from Goat Island. Eagle "United States of America" back with an N. P. Willis passage on the Terrapin Tower and verse signed Earl of Carlisle. Heavy foxing in the sky.
• Same eagle-back series, hand-tinted: American Fall, Niagara, From Goat Island, A Winter Scene, verse signed Byron. No blindstamp visible. Foxing and faded tint.
• E. Anthony: front margin reads "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1859, by E. Anthony." Horseshoe Fall with the Terrapin Tower from river level. The back label does not match the image: Anthony's Instantaneous Views No. 194, New-York Bay Scenes, Sloop Under Full Sail. Image badly faded.
• Geo. Barker, Photographer, Niagara Falls, N.Y.: No. 1 Prospect Point in the New Park, Niagara, on a red mount. Faded.

The Terrapin Tower shown on two of these cards was demolished in 1873, so they record a Niagara landmark that no longer stands. Old pencil numbers on some backs.
