About this piece

Antique stereoview by Bishop Bro's Photographers, Cumberland, Md., captioned "Cumberland and the Alleghanies," looking down from a rocky, pine-covered summit onto the curving creek, railroad and road through a mountain gorge. Arched views on a lavender mount, about 7 x 4 inches. Used condition with water staining along the top edge and overall fading of the image.

The back carries the printed label "Stereographs of the Baltimore & Ohio, Pittsburg & Connellsville R.R., Cumberland and Vicinity, etc. Photographed and Published by Bishop Brothers, Cumberland, Md.," with the section heading "The Narrows" and a printed list of numbered views. The card number is filled in by hand as No. 40, which the list gives as "Mills Creek, P. & C. R.R. & Nat. Pike." There is also a faint handwritten inscription running up the left edge of the back.

A good piece for B&O and Pittsburg & Connellsville railroad collectors, National Pike and National Road history, and western Maryland stereoviews.
