About this piece

Original handwritten court record from the Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace of Westmoreland County, held at Greensburgh, Pennsylvania, in February 1818. It records the report of viewers appointed by an August 1817 order of the court to view and lay out a public road from H. H. Brady's farm to John Stauffer's, and the court's confirmation of it as a lawful public road or highway, 25 feet wide. Single folded sheet, about 7.9 x 12.3 inches, written in iron-gall ink on one side and a little over. Condition: toned and lightly foxed, separations and small splits along the fold lines, edge chips and a few small stains; the text remains legible throughout.

The survey begins at a post on the Greensburgh and Stoystown turnpike road near the blacksmith shop on the farm of H. H. Brady, and runs by courses and distances in perches through Brady's land, the line of James Gemmill's farm, the Randolph Road, land of William Cornbrust, across a mill race, along the line of the Rev. George Scott's land and an old road, to the public road near John Stauffer's house, a total distance given as one mile, two hundred and fifty perches. The court directs the township supervisors of highways to open the road accordingly. Signed by the clerk.

A fine early Western Pennsylvania road and land record naming local landowners, of interest to Westmoreland County historians, surveyors and genealogists researching the Brady, Stauffer, Gemmill, Cornbrust and Scott families.
