About this piece
Original black and white snapshot photograph of a women's Hawaiian or luau-theme party. A smiling young woman in a grass skirt, flower lei, bandeau top and hair flower carries a tray of food past tables of women seated on wooden folding chairs; one chair back is stenciled "VU". Ferns, paper flowers and other tropical decorations fill the room. It appears to date from about the 1940s. The print measures about 5.3 x 3.6 inches with a straight white border; the back is blank. Condition: crease at the upper left front corner and a bent corner on the back, otherwise light handling wear.
The setting appears to be a club, school or social hall dinner with a tropical theme, possibly a banquet or costume party. The grass-skirt costume, period hairstyles and party decor make it a fun piece for collectors of tiki and Hawaiiana, vintage women's fashion and vernacular party photography.
A single original print, not a reproduction.
