About this piece
Antique divided-back postcard titled "Kirkwood", White River, Near Martinsville, Indiana, showing a cottage with a wide porch and a small outbuilding on a wooded hillside above the river, with the trees reflected in the water. Published by The Indiana News Company, Martinsville, Ind., Mezzochrome series, Made in Germany, number D 6228. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Postally used with a handwritten pencil message; shows corner rounding and edge wear, small chips along the edges, and general toning.
Posted at Martinsville, Ind. on December 13, 1909, with a green 1c Franklin stamp and machine cancel. Addressed in pencil to Mrs. B.S. Hays of Champaign, Illinois.
The pencil message, headed Martinsville, tells the recipient the writer got her letter and two more from home that day, was glad to hear everyone was getting along nicely, and was gaining weight and could eat everything set before them. Some of the writing is hard to read. A loose pencil scrawl also crosses the center of the back.
A nice early view of a White River cottage near Martinsville for Indiana and Morgan County collectors.
