About this piece
Antique divided-back postcard titled Feeding Chickens in Washington, a hand-tinted view of a girl in a pink dress and bonnet scattering feed to a flock of chickens under orchard trees. Published by Portland Post Card Co., Portland, Ore. and Seattle, Wash., Made in Germany, number 6376, with the round Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition Seattle 1909 seal printed on the back. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Postally used with an ink message; light corner and edge wear and general toning.
Posted at North Yakima, Wash. on November 2, 1908, with a 1c Franklin stamp and a flag machine cancel, and dated 11-1-08 in pencil. Addressed to Mrs. H.C. Smith of Tolono, Champaign Co., Illinois.
The message is written as a child's note signed Elizabeth Smith of North Yakima: they have some chickens and "this is me feeding them." It was papa's birthday, mama gave him a pearl-handled carving set, and the writer gave him a "Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater" box of Halloween candy and helped eat it.
A charming early Yakima Valley farm scene with a fun Halloween-era message, and a nice back-stamp piece for Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition collectors.
