About this piece
Antique real photograph on postcard stock showing a large twin-tower church with a broken, collapsed roof, heaps of rubble along its walls and snow on the ground. Three figures in long dark overcoats stand in the street in front of it. The right tower carries a clock face, and both towers have belfry openings and balustrade tops. Measures about 2.9 x 4.8 inches; the card appears to have been trimmed down from postcard size. Condition: used, with album corner tabs and brown stains on the front, surface loss near the top of the image, and heavy black album-paper residue along the left edge of the back.
The back has a divided postcard layout with printed address lines. There is no message, no postmark and no stamp-box marking, and nothing on the card names the place.
The damage to the church and the long coats suggest a European town photographed during or soon after the First World War, but that is not stated on the card and is offered only as a possibility.
