About this piece
Original January 11, 1894 issue of The National Stockman and Farmer (Vol. XVII, No. 39), the weekly agricultural and livestock newspaper of Axtell, Rush & Co., with Pittsburgh, Pa., Buffalo, N.Y. and Chicago, Ill. on the masthead. The masthead marks it a 24-page issue and the back page is numbered 24, so it appears complete. About 11 x 15.2 inches. Condition: toned newsprint with edge wear and small chips, and pencil numbers and notations around the masthead.
Front page editorials include Cold Weather in Europe, The Financial Stress Hard on Railroads (on railway companies going into receivership during the 1893 depression), The Wheat Trade, Feeding Wheat to Cattle, Hard Times Affecting Cattle Prices, Dispose of the Unprofitable Live Stock, and Who Should Attend Farmers' Institutes, under the decorative engraved masthead with farm and pasture scenes.
The back page is packed with livestock breeder ads: Holstein-Friesians, Polled Durhams, Shorthorns, Herefords, Cheviot and Shropshire sheep, Poland-China and Chester White swine, Hackney and Shire stallions and French coach horses, plus a full-width Scientific Fertilizer Co. of Pittsburgh ad and an illustrated James Leffel & Co. farm engine ad from Springfield, Ohio. Most breeders listed are in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Michigan.
An original period issue, not a reprint.
