About this piece

A WWII-era typed letter on the letterhead of The Thrift Fund, Employees Thrift Plan, Standard Oil Company (Incorporated in New Jersey), 216 West 14th Street, New York 11, N.Y., marked "Personal" and addressed to Edward B. It explains that Standard Oil (New Jersey), under orders of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, transferred its gas utilities companies to the new Consolidated Natural Gas Company, ending his employer's participation in the Standard Oil thrift plan effective November 30, 1943. Typed signatures of trustees A. C. Minton, O. K. Taylor and C. E. Shaw. About 8.4 x 10.7 inches. Condition: light toning, soft handling creases, and a penciled number at upper right.

The letter is written to an employee who had been "granted military or civilian leave of absence," and notes that Consolidated Natural Gas adopted its own Employees Thrift Plan effective December 1, 1943, with group annuities from the Equitable Life Assurance Society and the Prudential Insurance Company carried over.

A piece of oil and natural gas corporate history from the 1943 Standard Oil gas-utility divestiture, and a home-front document for a serviceman or war worker. The account status form and return envelope mentioned in the letter are not included.
