About this piece

A 1931 mailing from the Fort Necessity Memorial Association of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, with its original envelope: a typed "Dear Teacher" letter on the Association's letterhead, signed in type by General Richard Coulter, General Chairman, and a two-sided typed sheet headed "Information About the Fort Necessity Memorial," numbered 1 through 18. The envelope has a Fort Necessity, Uniontown, Penna. corner card, a 2-cent red Washington stamp, a 1931 Uniontown machine cancel, and is typed to Miss Gertrude Spindler, 444 Locust St., Greensburg, Pa. Envelope about 9.7 x 4.3 inches. Condition: envelope toned with a torn back flap, tape at the corner card and edge wear; the letter and sheet have mailing folds and light toning.

The letter invites teachers and their pupils to the ground-breaking ceremonies on Tuesday, September 29th, at Fort Necessity on the National Highway (Route 40), with Acting Secretary of War Fred H. Payne and Sol Bloom of the George Washington Bicentennial Commission as speakers. It asks children to bring a coin "not over a quarter" and sign Honor Rolls for a Book of Remembrance, suggesting a boy dressed as young Colonel Washington hold a three-cornered hat for the coins.

The letterhead lists vice chairmen for the D.A.R., S.A.R., American Legion, historical societies and fraternal orders. The information sheet notes the monument's planned dedication on July 3, 1932. Great for Washington, Fayette County, National Road and Pennsylvania history collectors.
