About this piece
Antique Valentine postcard reading "To My Valentine" on a large red heart set in a gold heart wreathed with blue forget-me-nots, with three winged cupids carrying smaller red hearts against a blue sky. Heavily embossed with gold highlights. Divided back marked Made in Germany. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches (vertical). Used with wear: a crease and small paper loss at the lower left of the back, a small dark spot, light corner wear, and a pencil name written across the bottom of the front.
Posted with a green 1 cent Franklin stamp (Series 1902) and a circular Ohio postmark; the town name is only partly legible and the year appears to read 1909. Addressed in purple ink to Mary Esther Burton, 203 Wilson St(?), Salem, Ohio. The message, dated Feb. 12 and signed Lizzie, is a newsy family note saying she cannot come yet, mentioning folks in the country and that all are well.
German printing and the divided back place it in the golden age of holiday postcards. Part of a family group of cards to the Burton family of Salem, Ohio.
