About this piece

Antique embossed George Washington's Birthday postcard showing a hatchet with a bunch of red cherries tied in a red, white and blue ribbon, with the famous tribute "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." Bright yellow background with a dark border. Standard size, divided back. Clean front with light edge toning; see photos.

Unposted, no stamp. The back carries a charming handwritten note to "My Dear Mary E." about the cherry-tree story — the writer says some claim it isn't true but it is a nice story to believe of a great man, and that she should learn the lines on the card if the teacher hasn't already. A red-ink note across the address side acknowledges receiving her postcard.

A classic early-1900s patriotic holiday card with a sweet schoolroom message.
