About this piece

The Youth's Companion, Boston, Thursday, September 30, 1886, Volume LIX, Number 39, published by Perry Mason & Co., No. 41 Temple Place. Weekly family paper measuring about 11.6 x 8.2 inches as folded. Used with toning, edge wear, a few small brown spots and stains, and a period handwritten notation "Mabel B Reed Jan87" along the right edge of the front page.

The front page story is "Miss Beulah's Burglars," a humorous New England dialect tale set in Dorset, about a nervous spinster, her friend Miss Mary Jane Beers and the hired girl Lecty, who hide the household silver spoons from imagined burglars. Two engravings illustrate the story: Miss Beulah confronting the children in the kitchen doorway, and a hand reaching for the hidden spoons.

The ornate masthead shows a globe, telescope, open book and palette in a landscape vignette. A charming 1880s issue of the long-running Boston family weekly. Pages have not been checked one by one for completeness.
