About this piece
The Illustrated Home and Youth, Vol. 1, No. 1, December 1887, published by Hill Publishing Co., 108 Market Street, Cadiz, Ohio. The first issue of this 25-cents-a-year family and youth paper, eight pages in newspaper format, measuring about 10.5 x 14.2 inches. Used and toned with a center fold, edge wear and small chips, and a handwritten name in ink at the top of page 8.
The front page features a large engraving titled "The Pet Deer" with an accompanying children's story, a cat story, jokes reprinted from the Toronto Mail, Boston Post and Troy Telegram, and the serial piece "Jane," contributed for Home and Youth.
Page 8 has a squirrel-raising story, "Shadow Pictures" with engraved hand shadows of a wolf, butterfly and donkey, "The Puzzler" column with enigmas, beheadings and a square word, and full-column publisher's ads for Agent's Sample Album No. 1 and No. 2 (fancy cards and scrap pictures), a Pocket Atlas of the World, and the paper's own prospectus promising 250 engravings in the coming year.
A charming first number of a small-town Ohio mail-order story paper. Pages have not been checked one by one for completeness.
