About this piece

Illustrated Monthly Good Stories, "Devoted to Literature and the Entertainment of Its Readers," Vol. XII, No. 6 (Old Series No. 138), September 1895, Augusta, Maine, published by John F. Hill & Co. This copy is marked "Sample Copy" at the top of the front page. Newspaper-format story paper, about 11 x 8.1 inches as folded. Used and evenly toned with fold lines, edge wear, small chips and a few short edge tears.

The front page opens the Western serial "The Rose of Camptonville" by Herbert Linton, M.D., author of "The Czar's Courier," "Tracked Down" and "The Red Flag," set in the saloon of "The Miner's Paradise." A large engraving below the fold is captioned "Mildred staggered to them, crying wildly, 'Flit, he will kill you!'"

The ornate masthead shows a woman reading among flowers with a sailboat and mountain scene. The sample-copy notice invites readers to subscribe, raise a club for premiums, and write for an agency, pointing to a large advertisement on page 11.

A typical Augusta, Maine mail-order monthly of the 1890s. Pages have not been checked one by one for completeness.
