About this piece
Original antique issue of the Youth's Evangelist, Cincinnati, November 15, 1860, Vol. II, No. 22, R. H. Pollock and G. W. Gowdy, editors and publishers. A Christian children's paper with a beautifully engraved pictorial masthead of children, a shepherd and lambs. About 10.8 x 14.4 inches. Used condition: toned and foxed newsprint with chipped, ragged edges, scattered stains and some small edge losses; text remains readable.
The front page features a large engraving with the article "Paul Preaching at Athens" and a "Story for Boys" from Rills from the Fountain of Life. Page 88 has an engraving of The Muscovy Ducks, "Spiritual Gardening No. 4," "Lost and Found," "Street Education," the poem "Would You Learn," a Terms box stating the paper was published semi-monthly at Tait's Buildings, corner of Fourth and Vine, Cincinnati, and a Little Miami Railroad schedule.
An original period issue, not a reprint, printed on the eve of the Civil War. A nice piece for collectors of Sunday school and religious publishing, children's literature, and early Cincinnati and Ohio printing.
