About this piece
Vintage linen postcard, N-390, "Parking Area at Newfound Gap, as seen from Rockefeller Memorial," Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The colorful view shows period cars in the parking area with signs labeled Cherokee Indian Reservation, Gatlinburg and Skyline Drive to Clingman's Dome, plus Clingman's Dome (alt. 6642 ft.) and Mt. Collins in the distance. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches, postally used in 1956. Condition is good with light corner wear and handling; the machine cancel shows faintly through on the upper left of the front.
Published by Asheville Post Card Co., Asheville, N.C., card number E-4299. The back has a printed paragraph on the park, which straddles the boundary between North Carolina and Tennessee.
Postmarked Murphysboro, July 13, 1956, with a 2 cent Jefferson stamp, addressed to Greenville, Ill., with a short handwritten note. A nice linen for Smokies, national park and old car collectors.
