About this piece
Antique black and white postcard captioned "St. John's Church (Episcopal), Washington, D.C.," showing the columned church with its domed bell tower among bare trees, with a large mansard-roofed building behind. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches, divided back. Unused with no stamp or postmark; someone has handwritten "Church of the Presidents, Built 1816" in ink in the blank panel at right on the front, and there is a pencil notation at the top of the back; light corner wear, see photos.
Published by Foster & Reynolds, 1 Madison Avenue, New York, card 99 G, and marked "Made in Germany." The back reads: "St. John's Church (Protestant Episcopal) was built in 1816. One of its pews is set apart for the President of the United States, and it is sometimes called the Church of State."
A good Golden Age card for collectors of Washington D.C. views, presidential history and Episcopal church postcards.
