About this piece
Antique printed color postcard numbered 8173, captioned "Exterior of Mormon Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Utah," showing the domed tabernacle behind tree-lined walks, with women in long dresses and a drinking fountain in the foreground. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches, divided back. Postally used with a green 1 cent Washington stamp and a Salt Lake City, Utah machine cancel dated Sep 1910. Shows its age: corner and edge wear, a small chip at the top edge, toning and some spotting on the back, see photos.
The pencil message, headed Salt Lake Utah, is addressed to Mrs. John Lindsey, Tuscola, Ill., Douglas Co. The writer, signed Lulla, describes a safe trip, "miles & miles of mountains," a place where the train had to go 14 miles to get half a mile, and says the train "played whip cracker with us."
A good travel-era card for collectors of Utah, Salt Lake City and LDS history, or early railroad trip correspondence.
