About this piece
Antique undivided-back postcard captioned "280 - Oldest Church Tower in America, Tacoma, Washington", published by E. P. Charlton & Co., Tacoma, Wash. The black-and-white view shows the small white frame chapel with its Gothic window beside the towering ivy-covered bell tower, picket fences, neighboring houses and a streetcar track in front. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Postally used in 1907; handwriting on the front, a light diagonal crease at upper right, corner and edge wear, toning and a few small spots.
As required on undivided backs, the sender wrote on the front: "I saw it Grandma. Elizabeth K. Smith." The back carries a green 1 cent Franklin stamp with a Tacoma, Wash. machine cancel dated Jun 23, 1907, addressed to Mrs. H. C. Smith, Tolono, Illinois.
The ivy-clad tower pictured is the well-known landmark of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Tacoma. A nice early Pacific Northwest church view.
