About this piece

Vintage black-and-white postcard of the Main Chapel, Fort Benning, Columbus, Georgia, marked "U.S. Army Photograph" and printed courtesy of the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company. The view shows the white Colonial-style chapel with its tall multi-tier steeple, arched windows and shrubbery under a dramatic sky. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Postally used in 1952; corner wear, a few small scratches on the front, and light edge wear.

The soldier's message is dated 14 April 1952 and reads in part: "It won't be so long now until I get out of this school. I get my officer commission May 9. The best thing is that I get to go home on furlough then. I should get there in time to be home for Mother's Day. I will get to be home during spring planting time... This school has been plenty rough but I am fortunate to get the training... Your nephew, Herbert(?)."

Addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Grover Thacker, Vandalia, Illinois, with a 2 cent Adams stamp and a Fort Benning machine cancel of Apr 15. A nice Korean War-era military chapel card with a first-person officer training message.
