About this piece

Antique undivided-back postcard of the First Methodist Episcopal Church Parsonage, Harvey, Ill. The black-and-white view shows the large Victorian frame house with multiple gables, a bay window and a wide columned front porch. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Postally used in 1908 with a handwritten message on the front margin; light toning, minor corner wear, some foxing spots on the back, and pencil dealer notations "#24 5.00" on the back.

The message, written beside the picture as required on undivided backs, reads: "Dear Cousin: This is where our pastor lives. The small pox scare is over but we have a neighbor that has a very bad arm from vaccination. Lillie and I are going to the city tomorrow if the weather is favorable. We are pretty well only I have headache quite a bit. Write soon. Jane(?)"

The back has a green 1 cent Franklin stamp and a Harvey, Ill. flag machine cancel dated Feb 14, 1908, addressed to Miss Ida Napher(?), Oakland, Ill. A great Cook County piece with a period smallpox and vaccination reference.
