About this piece

Antique divided-back postcard captioned "Miami, Florida. First Baptist Church.", showing the early white frame church with its pinnacled bell tower and Gothic windows, palms and shrubs, a sand street and neighboring houses at right. Published by The Hugh C. Leighton Co., Manufacturers, Portland, Me., card L254, with the "Quality" triangle logo. Standard size, about 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Used condition with corner wear (notably lower left), a small ink X at far left of the image, light soiling and toning.

The ink message is dated "Feby 18 - 1913": "Dear Mother - We leave here tonight at 1 a.m. for Key West. How are you? Write ... to Ft. Myers Fla. X shows where we stayed in this town. Next house to church. With love," signed with a short name (reading uncertain). Addressed to Mrs. H.C. Smith, Tolono, Ill., with a green 1 cent Washington stamp and a partial machine cancel.

A nice pre-boom view of early Miami with a traveler's note tying the marked house to the picture, for Florida, Dade County and Baptist church collectors.
